We are seeking a Vice President of Health & Safety to champion a deeply embedded safety culture while also leading risk management strategies that protect our people, projects, partners and company. This leader will empower every employee-owner to take ownership of safety and risk—not only as a job requirement but as a shared responsibility and personal commitment.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership:

  • Lead the development and execution of a company-wide safety strategy that reflects our values and employee ownership culture.

  • Foster an environment where all employee-owners feel empowered to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their teams.

  • Collaborate across departments and field teams to embed safety into planning, operations, and decision-making.

  • Champion transparency and trust by promoting open communication, reporting, and feedback to continuously improve safety performance.

  • Oversee the safety department's budget to ensure the efficient allocation of resources

  • Develop and mentor leaders at all levels to model safety behaviors that reflect respect, accountability, and teamwork.

  • Partner with Operations, HR, Marketing and training teams to deliver meaningful safety education that supports employee growth and engagement.

  • Partner with HR and Risk Management to maintain alignment with the Owners and Safety Manuals and ensure adherence to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Use data and analytics to evaluate trends, reduce claims, and strengthen both safety and risk management programs.

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all applicable regulatory and insurance requirements.

  • Represent the company in industry, regulatory, and community forums to reinforce our reputation as a leader in health & safety

Health & Wellness Leadership

  • Partner with HR and help oversee programs that promote occupational health, employee well-being, and overall workforce wellness.

  • Partner with HR and Operations to design and implement wellness initiatives, such as ergonomics, fitness, nutrition, and mental health support.

  • Monitor workplace health trends (e.g., illness, fatigue, ergonomics) and collaborate on proactive strategies to reduce risks and improve well-being.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health, Risk Management, Engineering, or related field is preferred.

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in safety and/or risk management within heavy civil construction or similar industries.

  • Proven ability to lead a culture of safety and risk awareness rooted in values, accountability, and our 5 P’s.

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, EPA, DOT, and risk management best practices in construction.

  • Demonstrated success in engaging and inspiring diverse teams to embrace safety and risk management as shared values.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and influencing skills across all levels of an organization.

  • Skilled in using data and analytics to drive safety, risk reduction, and continuous improvement.

  • Experience managing insurance programs, claims, and contractual risk preferred.

  • Passion for innovation, employee development, and aligning health, safety and risk goals with company purpose and ESOP principles.
